Sue Doughty Contacts Health Minister About Local NHS

Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Guildford Sue Doughty has written to Patricia Hewitt MP, the Secretary of State for Health, about possible cuts to services at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Sue has invited her to visit Guildford to meet worried local people.

The Regional Health Authority, which is looking to balance its books, is considering the closure of A&E at the Royal Surrey. They will bring forward proposals for consultation in October.

Sue Doughty has been leading the campaign against the possible closure. Sue and the Liberal Democrats have organised a petition across the local area and have already collected several thousand signatures. She is aiming to make it clear to health bosses that closure of the A & E Department should be excluded from any proposed changes in the public consultation expected in October.

Sue explained to Patricia Hewitt that if A&E at the Royal Surrey were to close, it could have serious implications for local healthcare. Patients would face longer journeys to either Chertsey or Frimley Park, both of whose resources are already stretched. People in Cranleigh and the nearby villages would face particularly long journeys with life threatening delays to urgent treatment.

The news comes just months after the announcement that both Cranleigh and Milford Hospitals are set for closure as well. Local people are very concerned that if the Regional Health Authority launches a formal consultation little notice will be taken of public opinion.

Sue hopes that Patricia Hewitt will be able to influence the Regional Health Authority not to press ahead with an expensive consultation for these unjustifiable cuts.
