Sue accompanies St Peter's School to Edinburgh to Make Poverty History5.15.33pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 4th Jul 2005
Former MP for Guildford, Sue Doughty met the challenge set to her by St Peter's School, Guildford to accompany them to the Make Poverty History rally in Edinburgh. Having been asked to take part in the rally before the election, whether or not she was successful, Sue was keen to ensure that she kept this vital commitment. Sue met pupils at the school as they gave their personal presentations about why they are committed to Make Poverty History and joined them for the overnight coach journey to Edinburgh. In Edinburgh the group of pupils, teachers, parishioners and others took the opportunity to a quick look at the castle before joining the march of 225,000 people that formed a ring around the city. Carrying their own banner the group played their part in the event. Dressed as Morris Dancers the group gave an impromptu demonstration of their skills for others to admire, having been given a quick lesson by local Morris Dancer and parent Geoff Balls who wanted to add a fun element to the deeply serious issues of the day.
Sue said: "John Williams, the Deputy Head Teacher of the school, and all connected with St Peter's are deeply committed to Making Poverty History. The pupils are inspiring in the quality of the knowledge which they have about the problems, and in their personal affirmation. Over the years which I have known this school, they have constantly striven to ensure that their concern is brought to the attention of as many people as possible. It was a great privilege to be with them at this important event."
