Shadow Home Secretary Mark Oaten and Sue Doughty MP listen to police concerns
6.23.27pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 30th Mar 2005
Mark Oaten, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, was joined by local MP Sue Doughty in a meeting with Guildford Police yesterday to discuss policing issues in the area. On the day that Lib Dems unveiled their mini manifesto on Law and Order Mark took the opportunity to look at Surrey issues.
Kevin Deanus, Superintendent of Operations West Surrey of Guildford Police outlined to Mark and Sue local initiatives to crack down on anti-social behaviour such as the 'Wall of Shame' where pictures of people under ASBOs are projected onto the Friary, and the 'yellow card' scheme used to deal with bad behaviour. Mark also heard about other deterrents such as the 'Water Bus' which the Police produce when they need someone to clean up the streets after themselves.
Everlasting paperwork was also covered, and the need to use better technology to stop the huge amount of police time which is wasted and gets in the way of front line policing.
Mark and Sue were also shown the CCTV control centre for Guildford.
Sue said, "It's great to see Surrey Police initiating new and creative methods of dealing with anti-social behaviour."
