Mark Oaten - Lib Dem Shadow Home Secretary to visit Guildford Police today

2.41.52pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 29th Mar 2005

Mark Oaten, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary will be joining local MP Sue Doughty on a visit to Guildford Police between 4pm and 5pm today to discuss policing issues in the area.

They will be discussing:

• Guildford's pioneering scheme against drunken anti-social behaviour where offenders are asked to clear up the mess they make in the street

• The excessive burden of paperwork on police time

Mark and Sue will also be visiting the Guildford CCTV camera control centre

Mark Oaten, who is MP for Winchester, will be interested in comparing Surrey Police's approach to crime control with that of his local constabulary in Hampshire.

Mark Oaten's visit follows the national launch this morning of Lib Dem policy on Law and Order by leader, Charles Kennedy MP. The Law & Order mini-manifesto outlines plans to put 10,000 more police officers and 20,000 more Community Support Officers onto Britain's streets.

The Party also pledged to increase the amount of time officers spend on the streets rather than on paperwork, to introduce a tough working day for prisoners, and to crack down on anti-social behaviour.
