Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy visits Guildford

4.51.58pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 15th Mar 2005

Following on from a walkabout in the High Street where Lib Dem Leader Charles Kennedy and local MP Sue Doughty had an opportunity to talk to passers by the party moved on to join lunchers at Age Concern.

The Age Concern centre, which is under threat from a lack of funding, offers an extensive range of services to the older residents of Guildford. These include pensions advice, bereavement counselling and an opportunity to meet and chat with friends.

Sue said "This centre represents a lifeline for some of our residents who without this valuable service would find themselves very isolated. Out of all the political parties, the Liberal Democrats are clearly committed to care for the elderly. We have today launched the most comprehensive package of policies aimed at lifting the most vulnerable pensioners out of poverty and ending the unfairness of the system by bridging the historic gap between men and women.

The Guildford residents we met were thrilled to have such a special visitor and I know that Charles was also delighted to wish one lady a very special Happy 88th Birthday!
