GUILDFORD MP TELLS MINISTER NEW HOUSING MUST HAVE HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 7th Jan 2004

Sue Doughty MP met today with the Minister for Sustainable Energy, Lord Witty and asked for a commitment to high environmental standards for new housing in the South East.

She said:

"The South East is facing a massive building programme. It is essential that the Government gives a clear commitment to the more efficient use of energy in new buildings.

"If we are to make a real impact on climate change we must do everything we can to ensure that the energy efficiency business can take advantage of this building programme.

"If the Government fails at this stage it would mean the loss of a golden opportunity for the environment."
