GOVERNMENT MUST TAX WASTE INCINERATORS - DOUGHTY

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 13th Feb 2004

Guildford MP, Sue Doughty, has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, urging him to introduce a tax on incineration of municipal waste in the Budget this year.

The Prime Minister's Strategy Unit recommended that the Government should keep an incinerator tax under review. The Liberal Democrats have proposed expanding the Landfill Tax to a broader Waste Tax that would include the taxation of incineration of municipal waste. This would provide a fiscal incentive to support recycling.

Sue said:

"We have a landfill tax, but with no incinerator tax councils are moving straight from burying waste to burning it. We should be moving away from both these options and focusing on recycling, reuse and reduction.

"The environment is suffering from the dead hand of the Treasury at a time when we need a Chancellor with green fingers."
