HARD WORK BY LIB DEMS GETS BETTER DEAL FOR RESIDENTS

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 13th Feb 2004

Waverley Council is to receive an additional £110,000 from the government thanks to concerted pressure by Lib Dem councillors and Sue Doughty MP, one of the two MPs for Waverley.

The council has been deeply concerned about the unfairness of the way in which money is allocated to Waverley by the government, and in particular by the way in which the government has taken the opportunity to cut the money provided for council housing, and for housing benefits from £630,000 to £490,000.

As a result of this representation Sue Doughty MP got the minister, Nick Raynsford to agree to reduce the cuts in money for this year by £110,000.

Sue said :

"This is good news for Waverley and for local people. I'm disappointed that this concession is for one year only, but our long and hard work has paid off and we will continue fighting for a fair deal in the future."
