FARE RISES WILL DRIVE RAIL USERS ONTO THE ROAD - WARNS GUILDFORD MP

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 20th Jun 2003

Sue Doughty MP has warned the Transport Minister, Alistair Darling, that he is in danger of driving commuters off the railways. The cap which keeps season ticket rises below the inflation rate has been abolished, signalling the start of rail fare increases. Research by the Liberal Democrats has highlighted the increasingly poor value for money offered to British commuters on the railways.

Sue Doughty said:

"Guildford's rail passengers already pay high fares and get fewer miles for their money every year. Rail passengers need and deserve a safe, reliable and affordable railway, but our rail fares are now going to rocket.

"Rising fares will hit Guildford's commuters particularly hard, but it is bad news for motorists too. More people will choose to travel by car, increasing congestion on our roads, particularly the A3.

"The Government was elected to make fares more affordable, not less, but they have failed."
