GUILDFORD MP CALLS FOR LOCAL HOUSING ASSETS TO BE KEPT FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY

12.00.00am GMT Fri 10th Jan 2003

Sue Doughty has criticised the government's policy for pooling housing capital receipts, which will allow capital to be taken from local government in Surrey and spent elsewhere in the country. Speaking in the debate for the Second Reading of the Local Government Bill, she attacked the government for ignoring the crisis in affordable housing in the South East.

Sue said:

"Our local community has invested in its social housing stock over many years. The capital from the sale of council housing is desperately needed here in Guildford to provide new affordable housing for key workers and families with low incomes.

"I received an assurance from the Minister that the money will go where there is a housing need. I shall be watching closely to see what happens. People on low incomes need housing wherever they live in the country and the large number of families on waiting lists for housing in the Guildford and Waverley areas is quite unacceptable. The government must change its policy."
