SUE DOUGHTY QUIZZES MINISTER ON POLICE FUNDING

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 12th Dec 2002

Sue Doughty yesterday met John Denham, the Police Minister to raise major worries about Police funding.

Sue said "Police numbers are now so stretched, that not only are police not able to go to most 999 calls, but there are now unacceptable delays in following up calls. Surrey Police is desperately under funded as the differences between provisions in Surrey and provisions in the Metropolitan Police grow larger. The minister must understand that Surrey is spending far too much money on training new recruits, only to have the Met aggressively poaching officers once they have some experience. The minister must reconsider pay structures to stop this constant drain.

We must see an end to one force paying for training officers and another benefiting from this training. If an officer moves to the Met, we want to see a reimbursement of training costs going into ito Surrey. But we must also have an end to the Met targeting local police."

Sue Doughty with other Surrey MPs pointed out to the minister that the high cost of housing in Surrey means that many police cannot get onto the ladder at all, and that much more needs to be done to support housing for police. She asked that the minister looked further into how police could be given help to stay in the area, particularly those with families.

A further concern discussed at the meeting was resources needed to combat gangs who are being driven out of London by the Met and who are focussing on Surrey.
