DOUGHTY ASKS MINISTER'S SUPPORT FOR SURREY TEACHERS12.00.00am GMT Wed 6th Nov 2002 Sue Doughty met with the Schools Minister, David Milliband MP, on Wednesday last week as part of a delegation of Surrey MPs. She raised with the Minister problems of recruitment and retention of teachers in Surrey. Sue said: "Schools in Surrey face lots of problems in recruiting and retaining teachers that the Government could help with. We need a fairer deal from the formula that calculates the funding our local authorities receive to pay for our schools. We are losing teachers at a very hight rate, not only to the North, where living is cheaper, but also to London. I pointed out to the Minister that although the cost of living can be higher than in London, Surrey teachers do not get the benefit of London allowance. "Standards in Surrey schools have been very high, which is a credit to the teachers we have, but are now under threat as we fail to retain experienced teachers. The pay problem in Surrey is resulting in a turnover of 25% of Surrey teachers year on year.
