GUILDFORD MP CALLS UPON PRIME MINISTER TO SUPPORT JAILED CHARITY WORKER

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 16th Jan 2002

Sue Doughty has tabled an Early Day Motion in support of jailed charity worker Ian Stillman. She has called upon the Prime Minister to make the strongest representations possible to the Indian Government in support of Ian Stillman.

Sue said: "Ian has been denied justice. The Government has a duty to do all it can to help British citizens who have received unfair trials abroad. The reaction of the Foreign Office has been disappointing. The Prime Minister must inform the Indian Government that the neglect of human rights in Ian Stillman's trial was not acceptable and should be redressed immediately.

After his appeal was turned down last week, Ian may be left waiting a long time, years even, before his case can go to the Supreme Court in India for a further review. The Prime Minister should seek assurances from the Indian Government that the Supreme Court will hear the case as soon as possible."
