POLL INDICATES LIB DEMS CAN WIN GUILDFORD

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 27th Feb 2001

A new MORI poll shows that if people believe that the Liberal Democrats can win in their constituency, Lib Dems would be competing with Labour for most votes with the conservatives relegated to third place. Voting intention in the poll was Lib Dem 36%, Labour 36%, Conservatives 23%.

Sue Doughty, prospective candidate for key marginal Guildford said: "People in Guildford have a real chance for real change. Even the Tories are now saying we can win, with the Labour party also advising people to vote for us. We appeal to people who wanted a real change in 1997 but were disappointed by the lack of improvement in the NHS, Education and the failure to help pensioners. We also know that the Tories' approach to privatising health and education in Guildford is not popular. We are still suffering in Surrey as a result of the underfunding in education and in health which happened."
